My 9 year old wants to make a string quilt for the next quilt show. She's thinking piano keys or Chinese coins. I'm thinking squares :) Would it be easier for her to sew with a foundation of paper or fabric?
I'm thinking ahead to having to quilt it. I know the seams can go crazy.
I have made a couple of string quilts and I would encourage you to use muslin foundation. The paper will be so tedious to remove from the back. Just my two cents.
I guess my two cents will be just the opposite to the Happy Cottage Quilter. I prefer a paper foundation. If a short stitch is used, the paper pops right off; I would think there could be some stretching with a cloth foundation, and it makes an extra layer to quilt through. Newspaper or really cheap computer paper works well for me.
