Coco Goes Shopping

Several pieces of news today.  Daughter #2 is still sick:(  At this point I'm not sure if she will ever go back to school!

Also April's color for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge is Purple.  I have no ideas fr this one!!!!  Totally stumped.  I'm not even sure how much purple fabric I have!!!

More importantly.....Coco goes shopping is finished!  It's actually been finished for a while!  I just finally took a picture.  The thing about Coco is, there is no batting.  Instead I used a piece of muslin.  I backed it with pink organza.  The idea was for the quilt to be placed in front of a light source so you can she the "shadow".  It looks really cool.  Doesn't photograph well.

Speaking of shadows.  My #1 daughter was working on a Brownie Try-it on Shadows.  She had to take pictures of shadows.  Here is hers.

Progress

Thank you for the birthday wishes.  I will be getting a pair of hiking sandals for vacation this summer.  We are going to the Smokies.  I can't wait.  My little girls gave me bling!  All of you mommies know what happens when kids go shopping!  My little one (she's6 1/2)  gave me this large heart "ruby" ring with diamonds all around.  She was so proud of it.  It is very bright and shiny, just like her.  My eldest (8) gave me a glass heart necklace with rock chips and beads on the chain.  It had a matching pair of earrings!  When I took the girls to school today I was all decked out!!

I have been using my day very well.  I have my iguana fused to the background of Coco's quilt.  I had to reduce the drawing by 50% to make it the right size.  Isn't he cute.  I think he needs a pink leash.  The hats need detail work to finish them off.  I reverse appliqued the window.  It was the only way to make it look like a window, and not a box stuck on the top!  That was my first attempt at that!

Here is my progress on my Knight.  This is just fused on.  If I have time today I will add some foil or metallic tulle for his boots, gloves, and helmet.

Gotta go, Girl Scouts is calling.

Coco and more

I am feeling much better, today.  Winter decided to show up again.  Unlike the rest of the country, the south has had unseasonably warm weather.  I'm talking shorts in January!  Not today.  We woke up to a chilly 34*F. (That's cold for us!)

I worked a little on Coco's window today.  I wanted something that would show up, but keep the window in the background.  It may be too similar.  I mitered the corner to give it a "window" look.  Of course when I placed it on the block, I realized most of the miter will be cut off:(  Oh well.  We will see how it goes.

I also started on my Red Scrap Challenge.  I have a big bowl of red.  My grandmother, she taught me to quilt, said every quilt must have red.  Now, this is coming from a woman who never ever wore red.  The brightest color she wore was peach.  I have a sneaking suspicion that she really likes red, but was never allowed to wear it.  It's an "inappropriate color" for nice girls!

Anyway.  I'm making another Alzheimer's Quilt using the red.  I drew this sketch out.  A simple vase of flowers on a table.

In honor of grandma, we have red walls! The wooden table fabric will also be used to make the hat stands in the Coco quilt. 

I originally thought about adding a lace doily on the table.  I'm not sure.  Which looks better.  The doily won't be that big!

CoCo goes shopping Update

Ok.  I drew a little this morning.  Trying to flesh out the window for Coco to be walking past.  I decided she needed a hat.  Therefore, she is passing a hat shop.  We seem to be in a very short supply of these lately.  Especially in the US!  I love hats.

I like the hats on the stands, better than the hats on the dummies.  I'm thinking ribbon embroidery for the detail on the hats. I also need a name for the shop.  Millinery Shop, just sounds too boring.
I also sketched out her pet iguana.  I've always wanted a pet pig, but I thought an iguana would just be too much fun.  So unexpected for a Diva in pink!

He has to be scaled down, but this is the basic design.  I can't wait to get started on this.  I have to get a little better, before I cut fabric.

I still  have to come up with a red Alzh. quilt for the Scrap Challenge.  I also have to come up with a design for the Quilting Arts forum Challenge.  The theme is Homonyms. 
This one is making my brain work too hard!

CoCo goes Shopping, part2

I haven't had much time to sew this past week.  I've had sick kids, work, and studying for a test!  Last night I did lock myself in the dungeon for a little while.  I added a potted plant to the background.  The pot is hand appliqued, it added depth to the piece I think.  The stems are all fused.

I decided there needed to be more leaves.  The plant was a little thin.

I like it better now.  I'm thinking of adding some more leaves in purple.  We will see.  I told my sweetie pie that it would be cute if Coco was walking a big lizard.  He thinks she should walk a poodle.  A poodle is too predictable!  What do You think?

Mardi Gras season is almost here.  In honor of Mobile being the home of the American Mardi Gras, I made a small quilt last year.  I haven't shown it to the blog world yet.  Today I hung it up, and decided to share.

I made the mask on Fast2Fuse.  It has silk ribbon, beads and sequins.  The King Cake is covered with purple, yellow, and green beads.  A friend of mine suggested adding a plastic baby, but I think that would just freak my kids out!!  I added Mardi Gras beads around the edge of the quilt.  It was originally made for the QA Calender Contest....didn't win!  See ya later.

CoCo Goes Shopping

This is a new little quilt I started today.  Daughter #1 was home sick... so I had some sewing time.  The idea came from, just wanting to make a fun...silly quilt featuring my alter ego CoCo.  Originally, I had planned a "French" scene with the Eiffel tower in the background.  That didn't look right in the sketch stage.   So I settled on a New York feel.  Big buildings and concrete.  I've never been to NY!


This is the background.  The large squaresare one building, the the large grey on the left is another building.

So far I have Coco walking down the street and in the back are some big buildings.

Now, I have never had an "art" class...really want to take one!  But I am trying.  It's hard to see her arm in the picture, kind of blends in.  The shoes were a problem.  This is the base.  Much more will be added later.

Happy Mail Day

I received my ornament in the mail last night from Quilt therapy.  We were in the HoHoSwap from GenX quilters.  It looks great on the tree!  Thank You Quilt therapy!

Yo-Yo's are sew much fun!!!

I have a little quilt to show.  This is for the QA forum challenge called "It's My Nature".  I'll let you decide if I'm the volcano or the Hula Girl!  This was fun to make.  It started out being just a landscape with the surf, sand, and volcano.  I had all of that done.  Lots of thread work on the volcano.  But there was all this empty space.  SO I thought....a Hula Girl.  I had insomnia that night and couldn't sleep.  So I got up, quickly drew her up and started fusing and sewing.  An hour later I had my Hula Girl, named Coco.  Later I used silk ribbon and wool thread to make her skirt and lava.  The whole thing was machine quilted and bound.  I don't like the binding, I usually do it by hand...but it is done now!  Hope you like it.  The quilt is called "Caution:  Prone to Eruptions"
